Title: Evaluating growth performance and standardizing best package of practice of pterocarpus santalinus under irrigated and rain-fed experimental plot

Abstract

Pterocarpus santalinus L.f. (Red Sanders) is a valuable and commercially important tree species known for its high-quality heartwood and medicinal properties. Successful establishment and growth of this species depend largely on appropriate silvicultural practices and water availability during the early stages of development. The present study was carried out to evaluate the growth performance of Pterocarpus santalinus under irrigated and rain-fed conditions and to standardize the most suitable package of cultivation practices for maximizing growth and survival. The experiment was conducted using different combinations of planting methods, pit sizes, and spacing treatments under both moisture regimes. Growth parameters such as plant height, collar diameter, canopy spread, number of branches, and survival percentage were recorded periodically to assess the response of the species to the various treatments. The results demonstrated noticeable differences in growth performance between irrigated and rain-fed conditions. Plants maintained under irrigation showed greater height increment, stem girth, canopy development, and survival rate compared to those grown solely under natural rainfall. Among the cultural practices evaluated, larger pit sizes combined with optimum spacing provided better root establishment and improved nutrient uptake, resulting in enhanced plant growth. The interaction between irrigation and suitable planting practices had a significant influence on the overall performance of the species. In contrast, plants grown under rain-fed conditions exhibited comparatively slower growth, although certain treatment combinations were found to improve moisture conservation and support satisfactory establishment. The study further revealed that proper field preparation, adequate pit dimensions, and suitable spacing are essential for achieving healthy growth and reducing mortality in Red Sanders plantations. The findings highlight the importance of integrating efficient water management with appropriate silvicultural interventions to improve plantation productivity. Based on the growth and survival responses observed during the study, an optimum package of practices was identified and recommended for the successful cultivation of Pterocarpus santalinus under varying environmental conditions. The standardized cultivation protocol developed through this research can serve as a practical guideline for foresters, plantation managers, and farmers interested in establishing productive and sustainable Red Sanders plantations. Furthermore, the adoption of these recommended practices may contribute to enhanced biomass production, better resource utilization, and long-term conservation of this economically and ecologically significant tree species.
